how to treat active ants in the spring

You May Be Noticing an Uptick in Ant Activity

Even in Central Florida, where the weather is warm most of the year, ants tend to go into a hibernation mode. During the “winter” months of our area (December -March), the weather can get pretty cold, especially at night. There were a few weeks in January where it was downright uncomfortable. Ants simply hate to operate in these conditions. So, starting in the fall they become extra active in order to gather food to sustain then for this 4-month period.

April is here and it’s in the 80’s again. Ants are waking up from their slumber and boy are they hungry. You may notice that the occasional ant scout is now visible. Yes, you can sit there and kill each and every ant you see, but this is a fruitless endeavor.

This is actually the best time to attack the nest. When ants are most aggressively searching out food is the very best time to lay poisonous bait out for them. They will gobble up the bait and take it back to the nest and feed it to the entire colony.

Do It Yourself

You can purchase ant bait at your local hardware store. The best kind for sugar ants is the clear liquid which you can squeeze onto a surface and let them have at it. Other kinds of ants, such as bigheaded ants, require a different kind of bait. These baits look like little granules that are larger than sand. It’s important to identify which kind of ant you are seeing so you can purchase the correct bait.
