Having served Brevard County and Central Florida for 45 years in the pest control industry has allowed us to see first hand how pests behave. We see which pests are most prevalent during each and every season.
Although our winter season is only a month or two long, we definitely notice an uptick in calls for bedbugs and other indoor-only related pests. As things heat back up in March we see an explosion of activity from certain pests. Here are some examples of spring and summer pests:
Ants: Fire ants, ghost ants, and carpenter ants and bi-headed ants become much more active as the weather warms back up.
Termites: Termites swarm in the spring. They are looking for new wood to devour.
Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes lay their eggs in the spring. By summertime, there are millions of these newly hatched insects in Brevard County alone.
Worms: Webworms and armyworms are most destructive in the spring.
Cockroaches: Cockroaches are more likely to invade homes in the summer when doors and windows are open, days are longer and their appetite is at its zenith.
Fleas: Fleas are more active in the summer. Your pest may bring them in.
Wasps and bees: Wasps and bees are drawn to flowers in the summer and are always active in warmer months.
In the fall we typically receive more rodent calls. These little warm-blooded animals are preparing for the colder/shorter days and start looking for shelter to hunker down.
Spiders also tend to make their ways indoors during fall months. You may notice an uptick in various kinds of spiders in your home. Most are not venomous but some of them are and that is always a concern. You can identify some of these spiders here. You may even have a snake or two attempt to make entrance in your home. We have had to remove them plenty of times.
Make sure to police your yard and keep the inside of your home as clean as possible. Make sure all cracks and tiny holes in the walls and screens are patched. It doesn’t hurt to have preventative pest control maintenance either. This can be done on a monthly basis. Your agent will treat the outside of your home as well as the inside. Pests are hungry and they want shelter and don’t care if the home belongs to you. It’s up to you to keep them out.
