Kissimmee was originally named Allendale after Confederate Major J.H. Allen, who operated his steamboat on the Kissimmee river. Later , in 1883 when the town was incorporated, they chose the name Kissimmee to represent their city as well. The actual word “Kissimmee” is Native American in origin but the meaning of the word is highly debated.
This area was originally mostly swamp land and the State of Florida contracted with Hamilton Disston to drain it. As part of the deal, he received 4 million acres of land, making him the largest single owner of land in the United States at the time.
Kissimmee is now known for its resorts, burgeoning communities and of course, its proximity to Disney World and the theme parks of the area. Its population has grown from 5,000 people in 1950 to 60,000 people in 2010.
