Wasp Nest

How to Prevent Wasps from Building a Nest on Your Property

The wasp is something we are all familiar with. One of my earliest memories was walking around the edge of an above ground pool and being attacked by wasps because they were nesting under the edge of the pool. They stung me relentlessly as I ran for help. You too probably have a story similar to this. It only takes one wasp sting for it to be implanted into your memory that these things are bad news.

It’s that time of year again where the wasp is scouting locations to set up a whole new shop. They look for shady places to build their nests and they look for places where they won’t easily be discovered. In this article we will give you some facts on how to keep this flying nuisance away from your home and yard. But first, I feel obliged to tell you that there are a group of people who don’t mind having wasp nests around their homes. These are usually older people without small children. The reason they don’t mind is that they say that wasps are actually beneficial to them. And here is why:

  1. Wasps keep the insect population down. They kill insects and spiders as well. I don’t know about you but I would rather have a few extra bugs than wasps lurking around.
  2. Wasps are actually good pollinators. Some even claim that they are better pollinators than the European honey bee which we know and love so well.

With that said, here are some tips you can use to keep wasps from setting up a new home on your property:

  1. Buy and hang fake wasp nests. These objects let other wasps know that this territory is taken and there will be a fight if you want to challenge the space.
  2. Remove food from around home. Food brings bugs and bugs bring wasps.
  3. Seal outdoor garbage cans very well and make sure they are picked up from the trash collector as often as possible.
  4. Get plants that repel wasps naturally. You can find the list by clicking the link.
  5. Cover Ground Holes. This will help keep yellowjackets, which are a type of wasp, from moving in.
