How to Handle a Mouse Infestation

Nobody wants a house that’s infested with mice, but when it gets cold outside it’s a pretty common problem for homeowners. If you suffer from a mouse infestation, consider using the following tips and tricks to get rid of it and prevent it in the future.

Block Entrances

The best way to keep mice out of your home is to block all the potential entrances that are available. That’s really difficult to do, though, since mice can fit into gaps as small as ¼”. Look around your home for any potential gaps and fill them all in with caulk, or block them off with boards or some other material that mice aren’t going to be able to get through easily.

Trap Them

Once you know for sure that you have mice in your home, it’s time to kill them off. Lay out a series of different traps to hopefully catch them and kill them off. Use bulk live mouse traps, bait traps and snap traps to try and kill them. Just be careful to use traps that kill instantly, so that mice aren’t crawling into your walls to die and smell up your home. You’ll be amazed at how many mice you really have in your home after setting traps, so keep setting them and set out more than you think that you actually need.

Keep Your Home Clean

Mice don’t need much food to survive, which is why you have to do everything that you can to keep all the food sources closed off from the furry critters. Put up dog food bowls, seal all the food containers around your home and make sure that there isn’t an easy source of food for these mice. Taking the time to seal away all the food will really help you prevent mice from staying in your house over the long term. Also make sure that you have clothing piles picked up, that you don’t leave garbage out and exposed, and that there aren’t other messes around your home. A clean home will help keep mice from being attracted to staying there.

Consider Getting a Cat

Cats are pretty good at catching mice, and adding one to your home could be a good way to cut down on the mouse population. Consider adding one or more cats to your home, and you might not have to deal with mice any longer. They are nocturnal by nature, and will be out looking for the tasty snacks while you’re asleep at night.

Hire a Pro

IF you are using all the method up above, and you still can’t seem to get rid of mice in your home, it might be time to hire a pro to do the job for you. Look for a good certified professional in your area ad reach out to the individual or company to help you out. These knowledgeable pros might be able to get rid of all the mice that you have been dealing with all this time.  They’ll probably know how to deal with the issue faster than you can, and will leave you with a cleaner home that has less pests.
