How to Get Rid of Silverfish

If you have ever moved boxes around in the storage area of your home, chances are you have run into silverfish. They aren’t exactly the most threatening of species. They aren’t very big and they don’t make any noises. They don’t move fast and they don’t jump. They are more or less just an annoying presence. And a little creepy one at that.

Silverfish are known to be one of the oldest species of insect dating all the way back to the prehistoric area. So, chances are the silverfish you see are direct descendants of a silverfish that shared the Earth with prehistoric humans.

They are attracted to paper products like the cardboard box I mentioned earlier. They crave the cellulose which is what cardboard is made from. They can become a nuisance when they start eating your scrapbook and other paper products you value. They can also make their way into your home and eat tiny morals of food which humans eat as well.

Prevention

There are natural ways to prevent these creatures. First and foremost always keep a clean living space and seal foods in airtight containers.

Try to keep stored boxes raised off the ground. Also, try to keep your storage space dry and sealed from the outside as much as possible.

You can try sprinkling spices such as cinnamon sticks, dried rosemary or bay leaves around the edges of the room. They are repelled by these strong spices.

You can also sprinkle the edges of your storage room with diatomaceous earth. This is a powder you can purchase online. It is made from millions of tiny particles of rock and diatom shells. A silverfish will avoid this substance because it can kill them by scraping their exoskeleton.

Cure

Call your pest control agent and ask what they can do to help you get rid of a silverfish infestation. Sunstate Pest has been in business over 40 years and knows exactly what to do to rid your life of these annoying pests. We will also make sure that they do not come back.

Solving any pest problem starts with treating the affected area as well as the surrounding areas. Its what we call a compound treatment. When you have worked with pests so long you start to see the big picture ie., what brought them there, how they go in and how they are sustaining themselves.
