How to Avoid Creating a Pest Friendly Environment

Pests come is all shapes and sizes. A pest is essentially an unwanted creature that has made entrance into your home or yard. They can be a mild nuisance or they can be a severe problem. Termites alone account for $5B worth of damage to homes every year in the United States. They affect over 600,000 homes annually.

There are certain things you may doing that make your place more attractive to pests. In this article we want to go over some of those things.

Leaky Pipes or Dripping Faucets

This may seem like a non-factor on its surface but I assure you that leaking or dripping water is something which attracts pests. Silverfish, roaches & ants may all be attracted to available water sources like this. Making sure you repair any leaky plumbing should be at the top of your list as far as ways to prevent pests. If you are not able to fix the issue yourself you can retain the services of a plumber in Melbourne, Florida.

Clogged Gutters Around Your Home

Standing water sitting in or around your gutter system will attract mosquitoes who then lay their eggs there. It may also attract other pests such as raccoons, squirrels or just about any rodent you can image. Making sure your gutter system is draining properly is a key step in keeping your home pest-free.

Over-watering Your Plants

Your potted plants need water to live. But if they receive too much water they can actually die. Not only that, but the extra water can be an attractive source for hydration for various insect types, including silverfish, aphids, ants, worms and roaches. It’s important to recognize areas around your potted plants which water may be accumulating and put a stop to it.

Overgrown Grass or Weeds

This is a big one. Tall grass or weeds are the perfect hiding place for rodents and snakes. They use the growth to hide and stay away from predators. There typically ends up being a large insect population in overgrown grass or weeds, further attracting pests. If you are trying to prevent pests in and around our home, start with the overgrown vegetation near it.

Old fallen trees should also be cleared away. These can attract termites which will use it as a springboard to your home’s structure. Termites are the most insidious pest because they eat away at the value of your home while you don’t even realize they are there.

Trash Bin Too Close to Your Living Area

We all understand that old food attracts a large number of pests. If you have an outdoor trash bin, it’s important to get it emptied as often as possible. Not only that, but storing it away from entrances into your home is a good idea. You can store it outside the garage or even inside your garage if it is a large one. A trash can can attract houseflies, raccoons and various others pests.
